History of the NPT Steelers
The NPT Steelers were formed in 2007 with a lot of spectacle over the clubs name and its origin. James Davies and Matt Crowley had a great deal of work ahead of them when they decided to embark on this adventure. The Steelers inaugural campaign of 2007 was one of mixed emotions. A group of mixed players from Union and League, spanning from as far west as Loughor and up to Bridgend, with many of the Union converts having little or no experience of Rugby League, were band together to put the Steelers challenge to Welsh Rugby League.
The Steelers soldiered through many storms only to record 2 wins during the league fixtures, however this was enough to cement a place in the Playoffs Round 1. With a lot of heart and pride the Steelers had not yet finished this season. A little magic at the end of the campaign saw a great result in turning over the Tigers in Torfaen to progress to the Semi Final against the Titans in Newport. The match against the Titans however, proved to be a bridge to far as the Steelers were well beaten on the day, but what a great start to such a young club.
The 2008 campaign was to be of a different set of fortunes for the Steelers. A lot of work had been made to see an improvement, with better standing in the league and a step forward, however with much disruption off the field with many players out injured for most, and in some cases, the entire season and a couple away with international duty and losing key backroom staff for some of the season, it took its toll on the field. 2008 started with a spirited performance against the Demons and a very good game against the Cougars in Round 3, but only 1 win was recorded in what was a long and hard fought season. While the Steelers made the playoffs it was to be of little consolation as there simply wasn’t enough left in the tank to pull off another Playoff upset.
2009 is beckoning the Steelers once more. What can the Steelers offer in their 3rd year? Watch this space. We will continue to grow as a club with our band of regular supporters and on the field as a team. The men from the Steel town will come to the fore once again. |
